§ How it works

Quiet and accurate.

The algorithm is boring, and that's the point — the numbers here match what Word and Google Docs produce.

Is the count accurate?

Yes. Words are whitespace-separated spans, matching the behaviour of Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Hyphenated-words count as one word; em-dashes, colons, and parentheses do not split a word.

Does my text leave my computer?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser in plain JavaScript. If you disconnect from the internet, the tool still works. No log, no upload, no analytics on your content.

Is there a character limit?

No hard limit. The counter is O(n); a 500,000-word document updates in under 100ms on a recent laptop. Very large pastes may stutter briefly.

What do reading and speaking time mean?

Reading time uses 225 words per minute — the average silent-reading speed for prose. Speaking time uses 150 wpm, closer to a calm presentation pace.
